This is the twenty-fifth anniversary of a bizarre incident in Brazil. A radioactive source, designed for therapeutic purposes, was left in an abandoned hospital. Scavengers discovered it and sold it. It was broken up (for reasons detailed in this article) and sold on. Hundreds of people were exposed and four died as a result.

Interesting stuff Frank, interestingly, most smelting facilities now have a radiation detector of some time outside the main entrance of their works, basically to detect any radioactive substances,
It's an expensive business safely disposing of radioisotopes used by hospital and other facilities, no wonder they sometimes end up getting dumped..
